John Stevens, a lawyer, warned his daughter, Gladys, not to associate with John Banks, a suitor for her hand, on account of his desire for drink. Gladys is also loved by William Elliot and one evening Banks became jealous of Elliot and left in anger. Gladys wrote a letter to Banks which appeased him and a few evenings afterwards he called upon her with theater tickets. While waiting for her in the parlor he kept the butler busy bringing in wine, and when Gladys appeared he was in a drunken state. Mr. Stevens ordered him from the house and he also was discharged from the law firm. Banks, seeking revenge, paid a visit to Gladys, showing her the note she had written him about Elliot, but he was promptly ejected by the butler. Then Banks wrote an anonymous letter to Elliot, telling him to keep an eye on Gladys, and also wrote to Gladys, saying that she could have the note if she called at his apartments. Thus it happened that Elliot saw his fiancée entering the apartment of Banks. He denounced her. She told him her reason for calling and when Banks handed him the note he laughed and tore it up.
