At an informal gathering of artists and musicians in the apartment of Vassili, a violinist, Aileen, the musician's sweetheart, is made jealous when Cleo De Bellville flirts with her lover. At a Hallowe'en party some time later, Cleo again tries to alienate the affections of the musician, and succeeds in turning the foolish young man's head. After the party, Cleo tells Vassili that her uncle is about to disinherit her and unfolds a plan to him by which she can do away with her guardian. Vassili is at first loath to aid her, but the woman's power over him has weakened his better nature and he accepts. Aileen, who has overheard the plot, finds an opportunity to substitute the poisonous powders intended for Cleo's uncle with a harmless sleeping powder, and at the party given by Cleo a week later the powder results only in bringing the rich man into a death-like sleep. Knowing that the host has been deliberately poisoned by some guest at the party, a detective is summoned and an investigation made which results in the arrest of Cleo, who has been forced to administer the powders, owing to Vassili's final rebellion at entering into the plot. Restoratives are administered to the stricken may, who soon recovers consciousness, and it is then that Aileen secretly explains to Vassili how she had thwarted Cleo's plot. Vassili pleads for forgiveness which is graciously granted by his true sweetheart.
